TRUCK DRIVERS IN NEW YORK

MANY NOW BACK AT WORK

NEW YORK, Sept. 18. Several thousand trucks, hitherto strike-bound, moved to-day. carrying much-needed food, newsprint, and other cargoes. All the New York newspapers resumed their normal sizes and full advertising. The Mayor, Mr William O’Dwyer, expects the trucking situation to be normal by the week-end. A spokesman for the employers said that a united front would be maintained by 90 per cent of New York’s trucking firms who were determined not to \ sign individual contracts or grant the wage increases sought by the truck-drivers’ union. A separate agreement will have to be made with those employers willing to grant wage increases of 7J dollars a week and reduce hours from 44 to 40. Union leaders said they believed other employers would quickly follow suit.
