TWO DEATHS IN BOMBAY
KNIFE AND LATHI ATTACKS (Rec. 11 p.m.) BOMBAY, Sept. 17. Two persons were fatally wounded and nine others slightly injured in knife and lathi attacks during the day. INFLATION DANGER COMMENT BY DIRECTOR .OF 1.L.0. (Rec. 8 p.m.) MONTREAL, Sept. 17. Discussing the economic background to peace in his report to the conference of the International Labour Organisation, which opens in Montreal on September 19, the director (Mr E. J. Phelan) said it had been proved during the war that public enterprises working together could achieve a level of production, the utilisation of resources, and a degree of economic stability not achievable by private enterprises alone. The danger of inflation was the chief present anxiety. If price rises continued, few countries escape consequent economic collapse. Wage increases, arising from increased productivity and not reflected in profits, did not represent an inflationary threat, but an agreement between labour and industry to increase respective incomes had to be avoided if the world was to escape disaster.
