WEDNESDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) REMANDED Valborg Clara Levy, a domestic pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a costume valued at £5. the property of Mary Ann Kearney. It was stated that the defendant stole the costume from a room she was using temporarily while employed at a hotel. The Magistrate said he would remand her for sentence till Friday, to enable the Probation Officer to make a report. Bal] was allowed at £lO, with one surety of £lO. Morris Colin Gilbert,- a labourer, aged 17. was charged with stealing, on August 29, a suit of clothes valued at £5 10s, the property of George James Broadley. Senior-Detective F. J. Brady said that the accused had called at a boarding house to see a friend, and had in his room taken a suit. Gilbert was remanded to appear for sentence on September 20 to enable the Probation Officer to make a report THEFT OF BICYCLE To a charge of stealing a man’s bicycle, valued at £5, the property of Roy Trevor Hoskings, Simeon Francis Barkle, a labourer, aged 38 years, pleaded guilty and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within two years, on condition that he make restitution of the sum of £5 within one month. Sub-Inspector G. J. Paine said the accused had taken the bicycle to his home, dismantled it, used a mudguard to replace one on his own machine, and buried the balance of the parts in his garden. The police had made inquiries and had dug up the pieces in the accused’s garden. He had a number of previous convictions 4or theft. BUILDING BREACH Cecil R. Davenport was fined £3 for commencing building additions without a permit. He said he required an extension to accommodate a new machine in his workshop. ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL Olive Blanche Gardner was fined £4 for not sending her child to school for 10 weeks, without reasonable excuse. FINE OF £2OO Walter Sargison, 5l years (Mr F. D. Sargent), pleaded guilty to charges of bein& intoxicated in charge of a motorcar on September 17, and of bookmaking on September 14. Sub-Inspector G. J. Paine said two constables had stopped Sargison when he was driving slowly but erratically and he was later certified unfit to drive a F. J. Brady said that in a suitcase taken from Sargison’s car and in his clothing was betting material exceeding £2OOO on races at Ashburton and elsewhere on Saturday. He had four previous convictions for breaches of the Gaming Act. . Mr Sargent said that, shortly before being arrested. Sargison had lost a roll of notes for several hundred pounds. He was retracing his course, thinking it might have dropped from his car’, when the constables stopped him. The medical certificate showed that it was not a bad case of intoxication.

For being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car, Sargison was fined £lO, hia driver’s licence was suspended and endorsed, and he was prohibited from holding another for 12 months. The Magistrate said that only 10 months ago Sargison had • been fined £ 150 for bookmaking, so he must have considered it profitable. He would be fined £2OO.
