Mr A. R. Cutler (High Commissioner for Australia in New Zealand) and Mrs Cutler, who .are visiting Christchurch, will leave this evening on their return to Wellington after a tour of about 1500 miles in the South Island.

Misses Mildred Cable, E. French, and F, French, pioneer missionaries in Asia, who have been visiting Chrjstchqreh, will leave to-day for Ashburton. They will stay, in Timaru on their way to Dunedin, where they will spend the week-end. Next month they will leave New Zealand fop Sydney on their way to England:

Mrs Russell Ferguson, who has been spending several months in Christchurch, will leave soon on her return to Canada. Mrs Ferguson, .who was formerly. Miss Rita Hall, of Fendalton, was yesterday bidden good-bye by members of the Travel Club.

Miss Etßd Evans, senior, library assistant Auckland University College, has resigned after about nine years on the library staff to take up an appointment as librarian at the Auckland Institute and Museum. The winners of the original short story competition held. annually by the literary circle of the Otago Women’s Club were: Miss Annabelle McDougall, 1; Mrs J. Sutherland Ross, 2. The judge was Mr MacGregor Cameron, and the first prise was presented by Mrs Stanley Batchelor.

“Now that health stamps may be used on receipts, it is confidently expected that the sale of the health stamps will increase greatly,” said Miss M. Enright, chairwoman of the local area committee for the sale of health stamps, at the annual meeting of the committee, held in the City Council Chambers yesterday. More than 30 women's organisations were represented at the meeting and others, who were unable to attend, expressed readiness to sell health stamps during the coming campaign, which will open on Thursday, October 24. Miss Enright appealed for the maximum of help as the maintenance of the children’s health camp at ’‘Glenelg” was largely dependant on the proceeds of the sales of health stamps, A roster was drawn up for manning the sales table in the vestibule at the General Post Office each week-day until Christmas, and for manning the vestibules of the chief suburban post offices on the opening day of the campaign Arrangements were also made for a street collection to be held in November. It wap announced that the day allotted by the City Council to the committee for the street appeal was November 27, but as that day was election day, an application had been made to have the date of the appeal altered. After the meeting, the representatives were entertained by Miss Enright at afternoon tea gt the Canterbury Women’s Club.

An evening social in honour of Mr apd Mrs j. J, Curti? and Mr and Mrs J. A. Crawford was held recently ni the Yaltfhurst . Schoolroom. Both families have lived in Yaldhurst for more than 30 years, Speakers were Mr W. F. McArthur (chairman of the Paparoa County Council) and other residents of the district. Mr and Mrs Curtis and Mr and Mrs Crawford were presented each with an oak china cabinet as a parting gift from their friends. The following ihemberg of the board of directors of the Young Women s Christian Association were elected last evening at the annual meeting:—Mesdames A. J. Benzie, M. Davis. Vesey Hamilton, V. G, Hampton, M. C. Hendrie, W. J. Stringer. N. McCrostie, and H. -Wyatt. The following members were re-elected:-r-Mrs F. M. Mitchell. Mrs E. J. Ward, and Miss L. B. Bishop. It was agreed that the term of office of the president (Mrs Peter Wood) be extended for one year.

A very enjoyable picture party, arranged by the Christchurch branch of the Overseas League, was held last evening in Hay’s lounge in aid of the Heritage movement. A varied and interesting set of films was screened by Messrs A. J. Gainsford and E. B. Rees and supper was served by members of the committee. The president of the branch, Mr C. G. MeKellar presided, and Mr H. B. Duckworth gave a short account of the activities of the Heritage movement, which, he said, originated in Wellington four years ago and now had 16 branches in the Dominion. The Christchurch branch, which would hold its third annual meeting in November, had under its direction 167 widows of servicemen and 269 children. Its membership was 850. and it aimed at m» creasing that number to 1000 in the near future. At the end of the programme, Miss Gladys Russell, honorary secretary and treasurer of the Overseas League, announced that as a result of last night’s entertainment, the Chnstr church branch of the league had raised £lO 10s, with which sum.it would become a life member of Heritage.

Three women sociologists have so far been appointed to the rural sociology branch of the rural development division of the Department of Agriculture. This newly formed branch will carry out research and extension work in home management and country life and with the cooperation of country women, its activities are expected to be of great value throughout the country. The women appointed are Miss Norma K. Metson, in Wellington, Mrs Eva Topping, in Auckland, and Miss D. Johnson, in Christchurch. Another woman is to be appointed in Dunedin later. Miss Mary Sutherland, who holds a university* degree in forestry, is also with the rural development division and will begin work in the Hamilton district. Her work will be to advise on tree planting round farms and the homesteads of former servicemen. J
