TRAINER INJURED

TROTTING

A. HOLMES ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL

The well-known trainer, A. Holmes, who has 16 horses in work at Yaidhurst, was admitted to hospital yesterday, after suffering facial injuries, caused'When Imperial Lady fell during a work-out on the trainer’s private track in the morning. No plans had been made yesterday regarding Symetra and Shepherd’s Brook, which Holmes has engaged at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday; but if they are sent, they should pay their way on the trip. Bred by Dr. G. Haskins, Symetra is an aged mare by Calumet Axworth from the Great Audubon rriare Symmetry, which took a mile and a half record of 3min 20 l-ssec. A consistent performer, Symetra appeared unlucky not to win a race last season, as her 10 minor placings included seven second placings, and she should leave the maiden classes at Nelson.

Shepherd’s Brook, which races in the interests of Mr V. Barker, showed that she is near her best form when, after starting from the 60 yards mark, she was eighth to cross the line at the finish of the Brighton Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on September 7. A well-bred mare, she is by Nelson Derby from Queen’s Treasure, which left other good winners in Single-Star and Hardy Oak to the same sire. Shepherd’s Brook is freely engaged at the meeting, and she may win more than one race. Jottings Willonyx, which was in P. P. Gallagher’s stable at Washdyke for some time, has been sent to Epsom to be trained. Golden Royal has done well since arriving from Australia a few weeks ago, and he is now in work at Invercargill. Navigate, which has now won £3152 10s in stakes, was transferred to H. J. Smith’s team at Halswell after the New Brighton meeting. The Australian-bred Dillala impressed Auckland enthusiasts by his showing at the matinee meeting at Epsom on August 31, and he is expected to race well from the 24 yards mark in the September Handicap at Auckland on Saturday.

The Tinwald trainer, S. Webster, is taking Shamus O’Brien and Nelsonova to the Nelson meeting. A smart pacer. Nelsonova would pay his way if he leaves the mark smoothly. Large Stakes

At a meeting of the committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club on Monday evening, it was decided to distribute £45,000 in stakes for the four-day meeting in November. The £7500 New Zealand Cup will be the main event on the programme, and the £2OOO Dominion Handicap for trotters will be the big race on the second day of the meeting. Should Win Again

Marshal Ney’s easy win over Peter Pointer at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on August 31 has brought him into favour for the Second Improvers’ Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, and he will probably be sent out a strong favourite. Owned by Mr L. Mackie and trained by V. Mackie, Marshal Ney is a four-year-old gelding by Lucky Jack, which won the New Zealand Cup Handicap in 1937 and 1939, from Seaworthy, which left the useful Acropolis to Dillon Hall. Bred by Mr A. Rattray, Balclutha, Seaworthy is by Man o’ War from May Tracey, by Captain Tracey from Harold’s Pride, by King Harold from Lady Hope, by Del Paso from the Berlin Mare, Countess. May Surprise Trained at Kaipaki by H. Natzke for Mr J. Henderson, Ann Scott showed her best form last season to win the Dominion Handicap of one mile and a half from Maioha at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on December 29 in the smart time of 3min 15 l-ssec from a 3tnln 25sec mark; and if she can reproduce that form she may spring a surprise from the scratch mark of the September Handicap at Auckland on Saturday. A six-year-old mare, Ann Scott is by U. Scott from Ann Parrish, a Guy Parrish mare which won several races as a trotter.

Well Forward Making his first appearance in a race, Luoky Dan created a good impression at Ashburton on Saturday he began well to follow Glen Devon and Thelma Grattan in the early stages of the Selma Handicap and remain handy to the leaders for over a mile and a half. Owned and trained by Mr A. M. McKendry, Methven, and driven by G. McKendry, this four-year-old son of Gamble and Rapido appears to be a smart pacer, and he should be well suited by the mile and a quarter journey in the Geraldine Trot at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. Taxes Paid The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club paid the following taxes on its twoday National meeting: totalisator .ax, £15,350; dividend tax, £13,431 Is; amusement tax, £57(1 15s 6d; stakes tax, £155; a total of £29,506 16s 6d. For its meeting on September 7. the New Brighton Trotting Club paid taxes as follows: totalisator tax, £7075 13s 6d; dividend tax, £6190 16s; amusement tax, £246 3s; stakes tax, £4B 10s; a total of £13,561 2s 6d. Caledonian Gold’s Prospects Caledonian Gold, which followed up his' record of two wins and three second placings as a three-year-old last season with a win over Red Ace at the AuckTrotting Club’s matinee meeting on August 31, is nicely placed off the front of the £650 United Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, and he should be prominent all the way. Owned by Mr J. Stormont and trained by I. Morrison, Epsom, Caledonian Gold is by the speedy Gaillard from Gretta Parrish. Out of Luck The Meth ven trainer, M. C. McTigue, was out of luck at Ashburton on Saturday when West Point and Indigo, which are both by Jack Potts from Waress, lost their chance when they failed to begin correctly in their races. Now at Epsom Mac’s Ace, which is now being trained at Epsom, is a seven-year-old pacer by Neutrality from Moranne, the dam of a winner in Frances Easton. Bred by Mr M. Moran, Highbank, Moranne is by Rey de Oro from Hannah M, by Prince Imperial from Minnie Tracey, by General Tracey from a Burlington mare. Neutrality, the sire of Mac’s Ace, is a brother to winners in Diviner and War Guard..By Jack Potts he is from Lily Bingen, which is by Nelson Bingen from Lily F, by Franz from the Huon mare, Lily H. Well-bred Filly D. G. Nyhan’s team at Petone includes a well-bred two-year-old filly by Indianapolis from Slapfast, which will race in her trainer’s interests as Indian Flight. Imported from America in 1926 by Mr J. R. McKenzie, Slapfast was later purchased by Mr F. E. Ward, Pahiatua. By Trampfast from The Apparent, she winners in Prince Roydon and Great Fast to Great Bingen, Silk Lady to Silk Thread, and Gold Flight to Rey de Oro. Winning Family Besides Royal Worthy and Confirmed, A. J. Wilson is working a six-year-old gelding by Quite Sure from Royal Serene, which will race as a trotter. Bred by Mr Wilson, Royal Serene, which took a record of 2min 12 l-ssec, some years ago, is by Realm from Placid, by Calm from a Black Cave mare. To Great Bingen, Royal Serene left a winner in Serene Bingen and to Frank Worthy she left Royal Worthy, which has won his way to the tightest classes as a trotter. Mr Wilson was pleased with Royal Worthy’s effort at the National meeting, and he expects him to race well later in the season. Confirmed, a six-year-old gelding by Quite Sure from Placid Derby, showed good form to record two wins and two minor placings in seven starts last season, and he may race prominently at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on September 28. N. Metropolitan T.C. Nominations of present yearlings far the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s New Zealand Derby Stakes, 1948, will close at 5 pan. on Thursday. —Advt.
