THE BUDGET
Sir,—Referring to my recent letters, in which I contended that the drapers were wrongfully adding sales tax, I notice in a contemporary journal, a message from Auckland. It states that certain firms there are adding a memo to their accounts advising customers that sales tax had been added, but would be adjusted when the position became more clear. I have since received a letter from the Minister of Customs. Mr Nash states that the drapers are entitled to pass on the tax on goods they purchased from a wholesaler before August 15. I apologise to the president of the Drapers’ Association for doubting his interpretation of the Minister’s Budget speech, and I hope this letter will dispel the doubts of other listeners who misunderstood the Minister’s remarks.—Yours, etc., . ANTI-RACKET. September 13, 1946. <
