SELWYN RIVER WORKS

Sir, —The writer would appreciate an answer by some responsible officer of the North Canterbury Catchment Board to the following query:—What works are to be carried out on the lower reaches of the Selwyn river, from the Ellesmere traffic and railway bridges to the mouth in Lake Ellesmere, and particularly in respect of that portion (including both sides of the river), between the upper huts and the lake? I understand that a sum of approximately £30,000 is earmarked for Selwyn river works expenditure. The Catchment Board’s intended activities on the Selwyn river ard of paramount importance to the owners of roughly 100 week-end huts, and trout fishermen and Acclimatisation Society members generally. A full and exact description of the works proposed would be in order and should be published.—Yours, etc., CONSERVATION. Sept. 10, 1946. [The chief engineer to the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr H. W. Harris) says: “Extended copies of the report have already been published. A copy of this is available for inspection at either of the board’s offices during business hours.”]
