RETURNS FROM FINE WOOLS

Prices Above 25d i Predicted ’ .. 1 INCREASE IN NET j PAYMENTS i i < An estimate that the reserve prices for fine halfbred fleece wools to be sold i in New Zealand this season may be as ] high as 25d for super wools, and the J auction price even higher, is made by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., in its < “Annual Review.” The publication also ] predicts a considerable increase in the ] net return to growers of fine wools, and , a slight increase to growers of cross- 1 breds. - ' The company states that it has re- ! ceived information that the reserve price of wool for the New Zealand season was fixed by United KingdomDominion Wool Disposals, Ltd., on the < basis of the export issue prices ruling in the last eight months of the life of the commandeer. “It would appear,” the “Review” states, “that these reserve prices may be, approximately, for fleece wools: —

“Let it be clearly understood that this is not an official range of prices: it is merely an indication of what may be the nature of the reserve price. The highest prices quoted are not necessarily the top values which will be placed on super wools, nor are the lowest prices necessarily as low as the bottom prices for inferior wools.” On the subject of net returns to growers, the company emphasises that growers this year will be debited in their account sales with costs that were allowed for in the prices paid during the commandeer, and not deducted from growers’ accounts. In addition to the normal charges, growers this year will have to meet the contributory charge of 7j per cent, on the gross value of their wool. Charges will vary, the company estimates, from lid per lb on average crossbreds, to 2Jd for an average fine halfbred. Results to growers would compare as follows:—commandeer value of average crossbred fleece, 14$d; estimated reserve price of average crossbred fleece, 16Jd; gross increase 2d, less charges lid, giving a net increase in the return of id. Commandeer value of average fine halfbred fleece, 16$d; estimated reserve price of average fine halfbred fleece, 21Jd; gros> increase 4|d, less charges 21d, giving a net increase in the return of 2| per lb. “This shows that the fine wool grower will receive quite a lift in net return on the basis of the reserve price,” the “Review” states, “and as it is anticipated that such wools will be in keen demand, his auction price will show him even better results. The strong wool grower is at least as well off as he was before and will probably be quite satisfied with this as, (1) he has his fat lamb, and (2) he knows that, with the heavy accumulation of crossbred in the stockpile, the retention of the commandeer basis may be a difficult one for United Kingdom-Dominion Wool Disposals, Ltd., to maintain.”
