FAROE ISLANDS PLEBISCITE
VOTE FOR SEPARATION FROM DENMARK
LONDON, September 15. “The Faroe Islands have voted for separation from Denmark which has owned the islands since 1380,” says Reuter’s correspondent in Copenhagen. The Prime Minister (Mr Knud Christensen) said that Denmark would respect the result of the Faroe Islands plebiscite in favour of separation from Denmark. “We must respect the majority,” he said. “Negotiations to arrange the separation must follow, and they must take place in an atmosphere of toleration ”
The Faroes, which are in the north Atlantic, about 195 miles north-west of the Shetlands, comprise 21 islands, with an area of 540 square miles, and have a population of more than 25.000. The largest island is Stromo. which contains the capital, Thorshavn. Colonised bv the Norwegians in the ninth century, the islands became a Danish possession in 1380. There is a legislature in the islands, which are also represented in the Danish Parliament
