ATHLETICS

PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ ANNUAL TOURNAMENT

This afternoon more than 2000 primary school children from 36 Christchurch schools will take part in their annual tournament, which is the culmination of their winter competitions. A total of 160 teams have entered for a Rugby seven-a-side tourney, 89 teams of girls in basketball, and 24 teams in the Association code. The Rugby gantas which are played in grades under the ages of 10 years to 14 years, and open, will occupy every available ground in North and South Hagley Park for the greater part of the afternoon. The Association games will be played in North Hagley Park, and the basketball will be on the courts in South Hagley Park. A prompt start at 1 p.m., with quick change-overs of teams, will keep a large team of teachers, acting as officials, extremely busy to complete the tournament in the afternoon.
