HAREWOOD TRANSIT SETTLEMENT

REDUCTION IN POWER CHARGES

A reduction in power charges to 4s. ss. and 6s a week for flats of one, two, and three bedrooms respectively has been agreed upon by the Christchurch City Council in response to representations made by tenants at the Harewood transit housing settlement. The charges will be reviewed at the end of this month. Reporting to the council last evening, the housing committee stated that future charges would deKnd on whether the peak load could reduced.

The Harewood Tenants’ Association, it was reported, had been advised that standing charges would not permit a reduction in the rent. Interest and sinking fund on each flat amounted to £55 a year, and charges for rates, insurance, maintenance, refuse collection. water, power, office expenses, etc., amounted to £l6 10s a year. The total of £7l 10s a year accounted for the rental of 27s 6d a week. The committee was unable to accede to a proposal to construct a double washhouse at each end of each ablution block because of the high cost.
