APPEALS FOR CORSO
MR J. M. BERTRAM NEW ORGANISER “ The Press Special Service ■ WELLINGTON, September 14. The position of appeals organiser for CORSO, from which Mr J. Gifford Male recently resigned to visit England, has been filled by the appointment of Mr J. M. Bertram. M.A., Diploma of Journalism. Mr Bertram has had many years’ experience in China, and it is expected that his services will be particularly valuable to CORSO now that that organisation is extending its interest to China. After studying in England as a Rhodes Scholar from New Zealand, Mr Bertram was awarded a Rhodes Far East Travelling Scholarship in 1935, and visited China. There he became organiser for Madame Sun Yat-sen’s China Defence League, which carried on relief work, and later worked with Mr Rewi Alley in the Chinese industrial co-operative movement. He was also press attache at the British Embassy, Chungking. Mr Bertram joined the Hong Kong Volunteers in 1941, but was a prisoner of war for more than two years in Hong Kong and Tokyo. Since his release he has revisited Tokyo as adviser to the New Zealand representatives on the Far East Commission. Mr Bertram’s home is in Auckland.
