U.S. Amateur Golf Title.—The former professional, Ted Bishop, won the national amateur golf championship, beating the national public links champion "Smiley” Quick, 1 up at the thirty-seventh hole. Quick, who led by three holes at the seventeenth, was all square at the twenty-seventh and then missed a short putt after halving the last nine hole*. Frank Stranahan, the 1945 champion, was eliminated on the first day of match play.—New York. September 14.

Davis Cup Tennis.—America beat Sweden in the inter-zone final of the Davis Cup lawn tennis contest, played at Forest Hills. In the singles Kramer (U.S.A.) beat Johansson (Sweden) 6-2, 6-2.9-7. and Parker (U.S.A.) beat BergeUn (Swedin), 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. 6-1. In the doubles Talbert and Mulloy (US.A.) beat Bergelin and Johansson (Sweden), 3-6, 9-7, 3-6, 6-0, 8-6. The United State* thus qualifies to meet Australia in the challenge round. The Swedes showed improved form in the doubles and delighted the moderate crowd.—New York, September 14.
