DISTURBANCE IN BOMBAY
SHOTS FIRED FROM TAXI ‘
(Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW DELHI. Sept. 14. Six were killed and 37 wounded in an incident in Bombay, four being killed and 25 wounded when shots were fired from a moving taxi in one of the city’s most thickly populated areas. All shops were closed and traffic suspended. British troops, armed with tommy-guns, joined the hunt for the gunmen who were reported to be Pathans. The police arrested four Pathans. A Government communique issued later says that Bombay is outwardly quieter since the shooting incident. “Only one stabbing is reported in 18 hours, but the general atmosphere does not reflect this improvement.” A report from Ahmadabad says that a curfew has been enforced since the outbreak of communal disturbances. The police seized a consignment of more than 1000 knives from the Punjab when they were unloaded at the Ahmadabad railway station. Ten were stabbed when the communal rioting took a turn for the worse.
It is officially stated that bombing is now taking place of Pathan villages along the North-west Frontier, which began in punishment for the abduction of a British political agent. There were very few casualties. It is proposed to reconsider the’ whole question of,frontier policy, and it is hoped to enlist the co-operation of tribesmen.
