BERNBOROUGH WINS AGAIN

LEADING JOCKEY FATALLY INJURED (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) • Sept. 15. The death of Jimmy Duncan, considered to be Sydney’s best middle-distance jockey, overshadowed the Randwlek meeting yesterday. Duncan was riding the favourite, Lord Dundee (trained by his father-in-law, Harry Horton) in the first race. He was pitched from the saddle into the running rail, when his horse fell. Lord Dundee brought down Double Mint, ridden by Darby Munro (who was slightly injured) and lay prone until the other horses had galloped over him. Duncan’s skull was fractured, and he did not regain consciousness. His wife, father, and father-in-law saw the accident. When Duncan’s death was announced, the crowd paid a spontaneous tribute by standing with bared heads. Bernborough scored his twelfth successive win when he walked away with the Chelmsford Stakes by five lengths. His rider, A. G. Mulley, changed his usual tactics of holding back and winning in a dazzling finishing burst. After his last experience, when he was criticised for holding the champion back, he decided to take Bernborough to the front early. Accordingly, Bernborough went to the front at the six furlongs, and won pulling aV lHiffham scored easily from Abbeville and Blue Legend in the Tramway HandiC The New Zealand-bred Night Robe produced a likely finishing run in the Welter Handicap to. beat Gay Monarch for second place.
