BRITISH BREAD RATIONING

ESTIMATE OF FLOUR SAVED MINISTER’S STATEMENT CHALLENGED (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, August 22. The Parliamentary Committee cf the Bakery National Trades’ Association has issued a statement challenging the" claim by the Minister of Food (Mr John Strachey) that th# saving in flour as a result of the first month of bread rationing was 33 per cent. The bakers’ statement claims that the actual saving was nearer 10 per cent., and says that it is too early yet to make reliable estimates. The bakers also issued a warning that a poorer loaf should be expected as bakers had now almost exhausted their supplies of Manitoba wheat, with which they had been able to improve the quality of the flour.

The statement claims that the present flour stocks are very difficult to use for breadmaking.
