ATTEMPT TO BAN COMMUNISTS
RETURNED SOLDIERS’ LEAGUE IN N.S.W.
(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 22. An attempt to ban Communists from membership of the Australian Returned Soldiers’ League was declared out of order at the annual New South Wales congress 'of the league. After sub-branch delegates had presented a motion: “that no known Communist shall be eligible for membership of the league,” the State president (Mr K. Bolton) said that he abhorred the thought of party politics creeping into the league. Discussion of the motion would have the opposite effect to that desired as Communists would receive publicity. A second attempt to bring the question before the congress was blocked by Mr Bolton to-day When a delegate rose to reintroduce the question, Mr Boltop ordered, the microphone to be switched off. “This matter was dealt with yesterday,” he said. “It appears to me that an attempt is being made to turn this congress into a vehiclfe to influence the coming election.”
