Ihe Maritime Commission’s post-war planning committee reported that if It a ° e increased as was anticipated the United States should be able almost to double its foreign going fleet compared with before the war. The committee said the Government hitherto with one exception had subsidised only one line in one trade route. However, to assure an adequate service on each trade route and maintain a Merchant Marine sufficient to meet defence needs it might be necessary to modify this policy.
