SPEEDWAY HANDICAP Navmate 01 ?,'? l? e , ca J! bre of Aberhall, Sir Michael, Dunmore, Dundee Cameroman, and Loyal Nurse enRanHi’™ 6 !, 4111 ?*? 28sec class Speedway hould P rovide one of the most New t he first day of the c Metropolitan Trotting Club's m A e < ing on Saturday. irA b< ;l? an ! Navigate, -and Sir Michael the the horses on the scratch mark, and of these. Sir Michael may carry most support, as he won his way into J a Y ol i r b y h* s de eds as a three-year-o.d last season, when he recorded starts 71115 ant * t Wo sec °nd placings in 14 The 12 yard markers. Captain Morant, Dunmore, and Liberty Bond, all have some good performances to their credit; but Dunmore will probably be sent out favourite as he won six races in fine style last season. A good stayer, Dunmore did not appear to be extended wheil he won the Papanui Handicap from Chinook in 4min 23 l-ssec on the second day of the Easter meeting at Addington, and with the prospect of a fast track at Addington on Saturday he may better that time considerably. Captain Morant looked well when he raced at the matinee meeting last week, and he shows signs of living up to the promise he showed as a two - and three-year-old. Dundee Sandy appeals more than Acropolis and Catalpa on the 24 yards mark, and his track work this week indicates that he has more than an outsider’s chance. Camefonian and Loyal Nurse look the pick of the back-markers, and if the pace is not on all the way they may take part in the finish.

In a race that is full of possibilities, Dunmore, Sir Michael, and Dundee Sandy may carry most support.

Jottings G. S. Smith has Zingarrie in good order. He revelled in his work on the small track at Addington yesterday. Watcher, which did not win a race last season, appears to be set a hard task from the 36 yards mark in the Speedway Handicap. Free Fight is one of the favourites for the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes. A quick beginner, Quartermaster should be well placed early in the Intermediate Handicap. This son of Quite Sure and Roxanne is now staying on much better in his races, and he is a possibility from the 12 yards mark. H. J. Smith’s candidate for the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes is Antrim Hall, a gelding by Dillon Hall from Lady Antrim.

L. A.'Williams has Paddy Potts looking well, and he may finish in the money in the Islington Handicap.

From Ashhurst VJ. Head, who trains his team at Ashhurst, was present at Addington yesterday morning with Willie Winkie and Culture. The latter, which has not previously raced, is a three-year-old gelding by U. Scott from Mac’s Jimmy, whitffi is by Maxegin from a King Cole mare. Willie Winkie, an aged son of Wrack from Lady Vanesbury, is no stranger to Addington, and he may race well from the 12 yards mark in the Stewards Handicap on Saturday. A solid trotter, he showed his best form last season at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting when he finished brilliantly to win the Stewards’ Handicap by half a length from Fantom, with Mae Wynne and Firewater in the minor places. He gave another good display to beat all but Bancor in the Stewards’ Handicap at the Canterbury Park meeting on December 29, horses which finished behind him in that race including some useful trotters in Forewarned, Modest Maid. Jimmy Dillon, Mae Wynne, and Steel King. WRU® Winkie is ‘nicely placed on Saturday, and he may prove capable of springing a sur-

High-class Colt One of the few three-year-olds to win over two miles last season, Globe Direct, should prove hard to beat from tne yards mark in the Islington Handicap on Saturday. Educated and trained by the late R B. Berry, this son of Springfield Globe and Molly Direct won the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes from Local Gold ana Sprayman as a two-year-old, and last season he proved to be one of the best colts seen out when he won the _Canter bury Three-year-old Stakes from Sir Michael at the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on August At his next anP®ar> ance, Sir Michael reversed places him in the Wellington Trotting Stakes, but Globe Direct came into his own again at his next start, when he won tile Metropolitan Challenge Stakes from Jacks Son. and Worthy Gold. ' * After the death of his trainer he was transferred to M. Holmes’s team, and for him he won the Ellesmere Handicap Qh * holding track from Mmmi Boy at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on May 25. His only other start for Holmes was in the New Zealand Stakes at the Ashburton Trotting Clubs meeting on June 1, where he gave another good performance to get within a length of Sir Michael. Globe Direct is a highclass pacer and he should eventually win his way to the best company.

Trained at Petone J. Pringle has arrived from Petone with the five-year-old Aerial Scott which will compete in the Addington Trotting Stakes on the second day of the National meeting and at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting the following week. A beautifully-bred trotter. Aerial Scott is by U. Scott from the Guy Day mare. Air Flow both of which were imported from America by Mr J. R. McKenzie Air Flow, which took a record of 3min 18 3-ssec as a trotter, is also the dam of a winner in Scottish Air. When trained by L F. Berkett for Mr J. Speirs, Aerial Scott won at his only appearance as a three-year-old when, after breaking at the start of the New Zealand Trotting Stakes at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s 1945 Easter meeting, he made up a lot of ground over the last six furlongs to carry on and win by 15 lengths from Sure Note with Our Nulgie another 20 lengths away in third P 1 After being transferred to D. Greenhorn’s team, he showed good form, when driven by his trainer, to win the Introductory "Handicap and E. O. Brownlee MemoriaiHandicap at the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting last year A Y™ Scott was later taken over by Pringle and he secured two minor placings for him at his last two starts last season. Pringle’s team also includes Galvena, which showed qutstanding four of the first five races he contested last season. Unfortunately this son of Gaillard and Romantic trained off, and he was unplaced in his next el £ht starts. Galvena appears to have benefited by a Sell and if he makes satisfactory Progress’ he will race at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting next month. New Brighton Trotting Club Nominations for all events «t *h e New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting to be held at Addington on Saturd ay, September 7, will close at 5 p.m. on
