CANTERBURY TITLES

PRELIMINARIES DECIDED Preliminary bouts in the Canterbury amateur boxing championships were decided at the Civic Theatre last evening before a fair attendance. Most of the bouts were evenly contested, and though no outstanding boxer was seen in action, several boys showed promise. In the fly-weight division, J. O Connor showed himself a correct and solid boxer when he easily outpointed J. Winder. O’Connor impressed by his good footwork, by a straight left with which he scored repeatedly, and by a solid defence. The 13-year-old. B. Shaw, gave the more matured C. Fox a lesson in boxing over three rounds which were full of interest. Fox opened with a whirlwind attack, but his wild swings and open gloves went wide of the inaritshowed a nice balance, and though his straight lefts did not carry much weight, they scored points and seemed to annoy Fox, whose attack became more erratic as the fight went on. Shaw scored a comfortable win on points. In the bantam-weight division C. Hay beat W. Jarvis on points; but the bout produced little clever boxing, and the in-fighting was not attractive. J Musson and L. O’Brien were well matched in the welter-weight, and Musson’s better condition and ringcraft gave him a well-deserved win. L. Murfitt and D. Jones were very tired at the ena of their bout, and the decision in favour of Jones met with a mixed reception. R. Tonks beat T. Burns on a technical knock-out in the first round of the middleweight; and P. Dwyer won from S. Butterworth. , m . In the heavy-weight class J. Tagalagi and T. Tonks had a good set-to, and after the scheduled three rounds had been decided-the judges failed to agree, and the referee, Mr H. Gunn, ordered another round. Tagalagi got a popular decision.
