RETURN OF KING TO GREECE

GENUINE PLEBISCITE THOUGHT UNLIKELY (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 20. “Many impartial observers doubt the possibility of a genuine plebiscite on September 1 on the return of the King of Greece,” says the Athens correspondent of “The Times.” “They fear that if it is held on the date fixed it might lead the country into still graver difficulties. “Communications in the big towns on the plains enable the authorities to ensure fairly satisfactory conditions, apart from incidental excesses from the widely tolerated Right Wing organisations, but conditions in the more remote and more inaccessible districts are unsatisfactory, if not alarming. “With armed Left Wing and Right Wing bands roving the mountains and influencing voters by persuasion and terror, it is difficult to see how the plebiscite can produce a result which would not be disputed.” PRODUCE PRICES

WARNING OF POSSIBLE FALL

CANBERRA, August 20. Warnings of possible falls in wheat and other rural produce prices were given yesterday by the Minister of Commerce and Agriculture (Mr W. J. Scully) to the Agricultural Council. He said that no one was justified in assuming that the present prices would hold over the next few years. The demand was still abnormal, but the American harvest was again up to record level and reports indicated that every country in “Europe which could grow wheat at all was doing so. Mr Scully said he was convinced that the stabilisation arrangements agreed on by the council would turn out to be of real service during the next five years.
