POLICE FIRE ON STRIKERS

RAND GOLD MINES DISTURBANCE THOUSANDS OF WORKERS STILL IDLE (Rec. 7 p.m.) JOHANNESBERG, August 13. Six native labourers were killed in a stampede and six wounded by the police when 1500 strikers from Rand gold mines attempted to prevent a large number of other natives from returning to work. Those killed were crushed to death at the Subnigel Mine when the police fired on strikers who attacked a native returning to work under police escort. Six othars were injured. The attackers later surrondorad their arms and returned to duty. The Chamber of Mines has reported that between 45,000 and 50,000 mine workers are still on strike.
