CENTRAL EGG FLOOR
ORGANISATION BEING WOUND UP The Central Egg Floor, Ltd., which has handled the marketing and distribution of eggs in the Christchurch area for the last four years, is now being wound up voluntarily. It was formed in 1942 when the four egg-dis-tributing firms in Christchurch agreed to a central egg-handling organisation being established, so that maximum supplies could be obtained for troopships. hospitals, and the armed forces. The Egg Floor’s operations are being carried on by Canterbury Co-opera-tive Distributors, Ltd., one of the original four firms which later acquired the interests of the other three. The Egg Floor was formed at the request of the Government, which asked the distributors, Harris Bros.. Ltd., Canterbury Co-op. Distributors. Ltd., the South Island Egg and Poultry Company, Ltd., and Red Comb Egg and Poultry Company, Ltd., to pool their resources and handle all eggs through a central depot, to save manpower, petrol, and tyres. At that time large quantities of eggs were required for American troops in the North Island, troopships. American and New Zealand hospitals, and other priority needs. During its existence, the Egg Floor handled several million dozens of eggs, and large shipments were made to the North Island.
The winding up of the Egg Floor leaves Canterbury Co-operative Distributors. Ltd., which is a producercontrolled company, with the sole right of marketing eggs in Christchurch. It is using the Egg Floor premises and is continuing to handle eggs under the Egg Marketing Regulations on the same basis as before.
