NEW ZEALAND WRENS
Sir,—Few persons other than parents, friends, some naval officers and the Naval Board know that Wrens of the Royal New Zealand Navy were not allowed to serve overseas. This, in my opinion, was a most unfair direction to a very efficient arm of the New Zealand Navy, particularly as members of the W.A.A.C.S , and the W.A.A.F.S. and members of the Nursing Service were sent overseas and English Wrens served at East Indies Fleet and British Pacific Fleet bases. No matter how high the personal ability and worth of a New Zealand Wren officer or rating, she now wears no service ribbon other than the Defence Medal, and had no opportunity whatever to win distinction overseas. The Naval Board should in fairness to Wrens tell the New Zealand public why our Wrens, alone of all the Women’s Services, were not permitted to leave New Zealand’s shores.— Yours, etc..
