LOVE AND WAR
Crocus under Foot. By Simon Dare. Hutchinson. 175 pp. Through Whitcombe and Tombs Ltd. In this simple, often touching romance, Mr Dare goes the rounds of an English village in war time, showing that all sorts of distortions of values may threaten happiness, especially in love, and tragedy break in upon it with a telegram; but Thalia’s last words—“ There will be beauty and peace and safety once more”— may be quoted to reassure any too credulous reader against the notion that Mr Dare lifts no threats and cancels no telegrams. This is the village called Dreams-Come-True.
