CANTERBURY PARK MEETING
TROTTING
TO-DAY’S PROSPECTS Although the absence of Sahara Queen robs the Juvenile Stakes at the Canterbury Park meeting at Addington to-day of some of its interest as a Sapling Stakes trial, the form shown by the other youngsters should be a good guide to their prospects in the classic, which will be decided at Ashburton on June 3. After the recent rain the track will be soft, and this should be a distinct advantage to the Greymouth-trained filly, Darkle Grattan, which has already demonstrated her ability to handle heavy tracks, and she may be elected favourite. Free Fight and Likely, from M. Holmes’s stable, are improving youngsters, and the lastnamed gave a fine display at the Easter meeting to finish second to Sahara Queen in the Welcome Handicap. Penalised 24 yards for her win _in the Timaru Nursery Stakes, Lady Diane is still a possibility, as 1 she finished brilliantly to win the mile race at Washdyke. At her only other start she finished fast over the last half-mile in fourth place behind Sahara Queen, Likely, and Darkie Grattan in the Welcome Handicap. On Approval raced well in the trials at Ashburton, but he is a doubtful starter and may make his next appearance in the Sapling Stakes. County Antrim is a nice type of colt in L. O. Thomas’s stable, and he should develop into a useful winner. Bonaparte, a son of Red Shadow and Princess Napoleon, the dam of Karangi and In the Mood, raced well in the early stages of the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes. His sire. Red Shadow, was a noted mudlark, and if the going is heavy to-day, Bonaparte should handle it better than most in this race. , . In a race which should be full of interest, Darkie Grattan, Likely, and Lady Diane should be prominent at the finish. Gallant Maid and Cameronian have come into favour for the Winter Handicap, and together with Lucky Loyal andNative Scott, they should fight out the finish Good fields are listed throughout the programme, and form shown here should be a reliable guide to the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting next week. Led AU the Way Driven by W. A. Thomas, who trains her for Mr A. J. Flynn, Lou Hall led all the way to win the James Memorial Handicap on a heavy track at the Forbury meeting on May 4 by half a head from Radical. On this form she must be given a chance in the Fendalton Handicap to-day. By Dillon Hall, most of whose stock go ■well under adverse track conditions, she is from Marie Rey, and in her 12 starts in Southland this season she has raced consistently for four wins and four minor placings. peels in hack races ia the near future, fie is trained by Ridgway for Mr F. H. White, and is one - of the stock of the successful New Zealand-bred sire Cambria Park, which sired a high proportion of winners for the chances he had. To Start in Open Company Rather than allow the filly to carry excessive burdens in hack races, F. A. Roberts has preferred to start Sanskrit in the Fairlie Handicap, the open sprint at Washdyke to-day. With Numie also in the field, Whitley may not be able to get his customary break on the field, and he will find Sanskrit every bit as brilliant : in the early stages. The Defaulter filly has enough size to hold her own with the open sprinters, and few possess more speed. Her biggest difficulty may come if the going cuts up too much.
