WOMEN COUNTY COUNCILLORS
WAIMAIRI PROPOSAL
Women, members would be welcomed to the Waimairi County Council, according to statements at the annual meeting yesterday afternoon, when the retiring chairman (Mr H. Kitson) said he believed women should be encouraged to stand for election. “Some councillors have indicated that they do not intend to seek re-election next year and I would like to see one, if not two, of their places taken by women," he said. “There are probably some who only need a little encouragement to offer their services. Housewives and mothers probably work twice as hard as the average man and they should be directly represented. They would add to our efficiency.” Cr. W. P. Spencer: I’ve advocated that for years, Cr. E. Stackhouse; Is that why you have stayed on the council for 36 years?
In a city area there were many social duties and other services where women were invaluable, but he doubted if there was the same scope on a county council, said Cr. F. Sisson. “Do you think there are enough old women on the council already?” asked Cr. J, Halligan. The chairman (Mr W. W. Laing) said an effort would be made to obtain the feeling of the women in the county.
