RIDICULING BUDDHA?
Sir, —Last night I was present at * performance of the comic opera Company at present visiting the city, In the first act of this otherwise enjoyable presentation, I was disturbed to hear the name of Buddha insulted and his image ridiculed. I believe that the religious faiths of all men should be respected. What would the reaction of the Christchurch audience be it a group of so-called pagans made merry with the name of Jesus Christ? Would they laugh as uproariously as they did last night?—Yours, etc., CHIONE. May 18, 1946, l“We regret to learn that exception has been taken to an incident in one of our productions, and in view of this will delete from the play the questionable lines,” said Mr A. J. Tait, manager of J. C. Williamson Theatres, Ltd,, to whom the letter was referred. “However, we would point out that this is the first occasion on which exception has been taken since the inception of the production in Australia some years ago.”] s
