OBITUARY
MR A. F. MORRISON
One of the foundation members of the staff of the School of Engineering at Canterbury University College, Mr Alexander Findlay Morrison, died in Christchurch on Wednesday at the age of 75. Mr Morrison, who was a member of the New Zealand Society of Civil’ Engineers, was educated at the Waitaki Boys’ High School. He joined the Railway Department at Christchurch, and later was employed as a draughtsman at Wellington. In 1893 Mr Mor-
risen joined Professor R. J. Scott as one of the foundation members of the engineering staff at Canterbury University College, and he remained a lecturer at the college until he retired in 1936. For a short period during the war he lectured in engineering at Papanui Technical College. Mr Morrison was one of the oldest members of the Masonic Lodge living in Canterbury.
MR D. C. DAVIE The death occurred in Christchurch yesterday of Mr Donald Cyrus Davie, a grandson of one of the arrivals in Canterbury with the First Four Ships. Mr Davie was educated at the Fendalton School and ’ Christ’s College, and for some time farmed in North Canterbury and Hokianga. Later he wrote and lectured on finance and economics, and was one of the pioneers of the Douglas Social Credit Movement in Canterbury. He was at one time president of the Sumner branch of the Labour Party, and in 1935 he unsuccessfully contested the Hurunui seat in the party’s interests. Mr Davie had for some years been living in retirement at Wainui, Banks Peninsula. He is survived by his widow. MR C. N. HARDIE The death occurred on Wednesday of Mr Charles Norman Hardie, a former president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, and at one time a member of the Council of Canterbury University College. Mr Hardie, who was 83 years of age. began his career at the Sydenham School as a pupil teacher. He taught also at the East Christchurch and Normal Schools, and m 1891 was appointed headmaster of the Papanui School. In 1897 he was. appointed headmaster of the Ashburton School, a position he held until 1904, when he became headmaster of the Christchurch West School. He remained there until 1910. and for nine years was an inspector of schools in Canterbury. Mr Fardie was a member of the Canterbury University College Council from 1925 to 1927, and later was librarian at the college. MR FREDRICK SMITH The death of Mr Fredrick Smith, Riccarton. occurred on May 10, at the age of 78. He was well known and respected in the Springs-Ellesmere district. where he was a schoolmaster over a period of 25 years. Mr Smith, who was . born in >erthshire. Scotland, was educated at Dumbarton College and Edinburgh Training College. For health reasons he emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 28. He had sole charge of the school at Sutherlands, South Canterbury, for two years before being appointed headmaster at Pareora, where he remained until 1906. He then became headmaster at Springston South. He was appointed headmaster at Dunsandel in 1912 and retained that position until his retirement in 1931. He won the respect of his many pupils, and as well played a full part in community life. He was a Sunday school and Bible class teacher and choirmaster for the Presbyterian Church at Dunsandel. In recognition of his work for the fighting forces and the Red Cross, the Dunsandel branch of the Returned Services’ Association retained him as its patron. A widely read man. he had a fine library. He was a keen horticulturist, and was one of the first to introduce lucerne. He was a member of the Caledonian Masonic Lodge No. 16. Timaru, ard a Past Master of Lodge Ahurewa No. 181. Dunsandel.
Mr Smith leaves his wife (formerly Miss Mary Sams. Sutherlands) and three children. Messrs F. and C M Smith. Riccarton. and Mrs C. M. Sheat. Dunsandel.
There was a private interment t the Rur u Lawn Cemetery. Numerous wreaths and messages were received from many parts of New Zealand and the flag was flown/at half-mast at the Dunsandel School.
