AUSTRALIAN TROOPS IN JAPAN

NO ACCOMMODATION FOR FAMILIES

(Rec. 8 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 22. The Acting-Prime Minister (Mr F. M Forde) said there was no likelihood of any accommodation being ready for the wives and families of Australian troops in Japan in the near future. He was commenting on a reported promise by the Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) at Iwakuni, Japan, that Australian members of the British Commonwealth occupation forces in Japan might soon be allowed to send for their wives and families. Mr Forde said the Commander-in-Chief of the British Commonwealth occupation forces (Lieutenant-General J. Northcott) had been ordered to report on the available accommodation, but the conditions under which families could travel had not yet been defined.
