FIRST NEW ZEALAND WELCOME
GENERAL AND LADY FREYBERG
(Special Correspondent n!z.P.A.) (Rec. 9 p.m.) CRISTOBAL (Panama Canal Zone)
May 21. Their first welcome by New Zealanders was accorded to the Governor-General-designate (Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg) and Lady Freyberg in the Panama Canal, when the Ruahine passed the Durango, which is bound for Britain, in the Culebra Cut before lunch on Tuesday. The Durango’s captain obligingly sent a Morse code message of welcome and good wishes to the oncoming Ruahine on behalf of the full complement of New Zealand passengers, including the science delegation (Sir Theodore Rigg, Professor C. E. Hercus, and Professor F. G. Soper), the eight members of the delegation to the Empire Press Union conference, and various members of the services, headed by Air Commodore M. W. Buckley and Squadron Leader K. F. Thiele, who were all on the* Durango’s boat deck.
Using megaphones, the passengers sang the Maori Battalion song and shouted the general’s name. General Freyberg, from the bridge of the Ruahine, waved acknowledgements. He replied with a cordial wireless message immediately.
