UNIVERSITY DEGREES

CANTERBURY COLLEGE CEREMONY TRIBUTE TO STUDENTS IN SERVICES The graduation ceremony of Canterbury University College yesterday was brought to the notice of a much larger number of the public than usual by being held in the Civic Theatre. Shortly after 2 p.m. the procession of graduates, members of the college staff, college council, and University Senate, in their colourful gowns and hoods, set out from Canterbury College and moved down Worcester street, through Cathedral square, to the theatre, which was almost filled. Mr J. H. E. Schroder, chairman of the college council, apologised for the absence of the Chancellor of the University of New Zealand (the Hon. Mr Justice Smith), welcomed the ProChancellor (Dr. James Hight), and conveyed the congratulations and good ■wishes of the council to graduates. The Pro-Chancellor, after conferring degrees, said there were several features which made this ceremony of unusual interest. One was the presence of so many returned servicemen, some of whom had received degrees. “The public does not know how many New Zealand servicemen either began or completed University courses, undismayed by the activities attendant on active service,” said Dr. Hight. He was one of those who could say how surprised the examiners were at the quality of the work submitted. The same attributes which had made them good soldiers had made them good students. He was confident that those who had received degrees would reflect credit on themselves, on the institutions which trained them, and on their country. The list of degrees conferred was as follows: Faculty of Arts Master of Arts: Badian, Ernest, firstclass honours in French; Barnett, Francis Joseph, first-class honours in Greek; Ellis, Margaret Patricia, third-class honours in English and Latin; Holland, Donald McIntyre, first-ciass honours in history; Lummis, Loma May, second-class honours in French; -Molineaux, Paul Loxton, thirdclass honours in philosophy; McMillan, Mary Christina, third-class honours in history; Peacock, Ann Baly, first-class honours in geography; Pocock.
