LYTTELTON BOROUGH
Sir,—Residents of Lyttelton are gen-erous-minded, sentimental, and longsuffering. During March the Lyttelton Borough Council made many necessary promises. The expenditure of some of the £23,000 it claimed to have in cash is long overdue on better services, particularly the gas supply. Believing that the council could function if given a further chance, I foolishly voted against amalgamation. It appears the council has not the ability to manage the gas works, -and as its promises were so much hot air, like the gas, the council should be out.— Yours, etc., BUNSEN. Lyttelton. May 4, 1946. \
f“I think the report published in “The Press” yesterday fully answers this correspondent,” said the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr W. T. Lester), * to whom this letter was referred. “Many gasworks throughout the country are having trouble through similar causes, shortage of coal, unsuitable coal, and shortage of staff. As to the reference to amalgamation, it is hard to see what Christchurch City would have done, seeing that they have only one gas expert, who is more than fully employed in his present position.”]
