FAMILY BENEFIT
«CLAIMS RECEIVING FULL ATTENTION”
MINISTER’S STATEMENT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 8. “Some applicants for the universal family benefit have expressed anxiety whether their claims are receiving attention, and if so if the payment should be made from April 1 last, when the benefit became operative,’’ said the Minister of Social Security (the Hon. W. E. Parry) to-day. “All claims are receiving full attention,’’ said the Minister. “Because of the shortage of staff, particularly trained staff, the herculean task of completing all the claims, which totalled 173,146, has not yet been finished. A total of 61,038 applicants has already received payment of the amount due to date, and the social security staff is working at high pressure to expedite completion of the remaining claims. “I should like to assure all applicants that even if claims have not yet been met, retrospective payment to April 1, 1946, will be made in respect of all claims lodged during and before the month of April. Any claim lodged on or since the beginning of this month, in accordance with the provisions of the legislation, will be payable as from May 1.”
