MR ATTLEE’S ADVICE TO DEMOCRACIES

LONDON, May 7. “The democracies must not again fall into the trap of losing interest in their armed forces after the war,” said the Prime Minister. Mr Attlee, in a speech to the Newspaper Society. “We have all learned that peace does not come through weakness. We must keep efficient forces. “I want you to know how immensely valuable it is to have the Dominions’ experience,, knowledge, friendship, and support at our disposal,” said Mr Attlee, referring to the Dominions Conference. "The united Kingdom is part of a model United Nations in which we are linked with the Dominions, not in any aggressive, threatening group, but by the bonds of friendship and a common belief in the democratic ways of life.” Mr Attlee said that the newspapers represented one of the most essential Instruments of democracy in which the strength of the British Commonwealth lay.
