TRANSPORT FOR J FORCE

EMPIRE PRIDE TO TAKE 1500 MEN

<P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 7. About 1500 men will probably make up the first contingent of J Force to travel to Japan on the Empir> Pride, which is expected to arrive in New Zealand for this purpose toward the end of the month. The Empire Pride is »a 9248 ton motor-ship, built during the war especially for the British Ministry of War Transport, and 1500 is approximately the normal complement of troops she can carry with comfort. Although no official pronouncement has yet been made on the subject, it is thought likely that about 1000 of the 1500 men who will sail on the Empire Pride will be from the Northern Military District. The district’s quota of men is now training- at Papakura camp.

The first section to go to Japan to relieve the men already serving there will probably be representative of all units. As the total number of men to be transported is more than 4000, it is likely that a second ship will be allotted, although it is not yet known whether the Empire Pride will be required to make more than one trip. No statement has yet been issued as to whether the men who are relieved in Japan will return to New Zealand on this vessel, or whether alternative transport has been arranged.
