AUSTRALIAN RACING

GOOD IDEA WINS VICTORY CVP (N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.50 p.m.) BRISBANE. May 6. • Good Idea, owned by a Sydney bookmaker, A. Browning, won the £5OOO Victory Ciy> at Ascot to-day. In a desperate finish, Good Idea beat Chaytor by half a length, with the favourite, Swan River, a head away third. The result was: GOOD IDEA 8-6 Badger 1; Chaytor 7-9 Thompson 2; Swan River 8-6 Cook 3. Thirteen started. Time, 2min 31sec. A Break with Tradition The Australian Jockey Club committee recently invited the chief turf writers of Sydney newspapers to have an informal chat with them on racing matters. This departure from the rigid tradition of the leading New South Wales club was welcomed by critics, who hoped that it would lead to closer liaison between the controllers of racing and the press, it being maintained that many committeemen of leading clubs had a very hazy knowledge of the value of press relations.

Even in England, where tradition was almost immovable, the Jockey Club recently appointed a distinguished turf writer as its press relations officer. He handles all publicity, and is a real link between the stewards of the Jockey Club and the public. The A.J.C. committee may envisage a similar appointment. Amberley Racing Club

Acceptances (racing events) and withdrawals (trotting events) will close at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s rooms at 5 p.m. to-day. —Advt.
