RETENTION IN ARMY
COMPLAINT BY MEN IN AUCKLAND
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 6. Because they claimed that they were ceing retained under emergency conditions to do work that was unimportant and did not require urgent attention, 54 men, mostly from the 34th Army Troop Company, an engineer unit, ceased work at Gloucester Park military camp this morning for two hours. In a statement handed to the camp commandant the men asked that their complaint be conveyed to the authorities, with a request that some explanation be given why they are being retained unnecessarily in the Army. They also expressed a complaint concerning the camp guard, some aspects in connexion with which, it is stated, will be made public when several men appear before a district court-martial on Friday next.
