PAY OF NURSES
Sir, —Over the last few years there has been much discussion and criticism regarding rates of pay for the nursing profession. On reading “The Press” of May 1, I was struck by two advertisements. One was for male nursing orderlies for the Cashmere Sanatorium, salary to commence £341 per annum, the second for trained nurses, salary £l9O to £2BO per annum, according to experience. When one reads of the great difference in salary offered to men and women for practically the same work, one is not surprised that our girls are not entering the noble profession of nursing. A nurse, after spending years in training, is offered £l9O per annum, as against £341 per annum offered to practically untrained male nursing orderlies. Nursing aids are offered £136 per annum. How can one expect these girls even to clothe themselves decently on such a salary.—Yours, etc., ADMIRER OF NURSING PROFESSION. May 2, 1946.
