The Governor-General designate, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg, was elected patron of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union at the annual meeting yesterday.—(P.A.)

The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) arrived in Christchurch by air from Dunedin yesterday and delivered the principal address at the Canterbury University College Commemoration Day last evening. He will spend to-day visiting Christchurch factories, leaving on his return to Wellington to-morrow morning. Messrs Vivian and Leo Walsh have been elected life members of the Air Force Association in recognition of their pioneer work in New Zealand aviation.—(P.A.)

Mr R. C. Sandford, who for the last two and a half years has been field commissioner for the Canterbury Boy Scouts’ Association, has resigned to take up the position of housemaster at the Borstal Institution, Invercargill. He will leave Christchurch about the middle of this month. Wing Commander F. R. Dix has been posted to command the R.N.Z.A.F. station at Wigram. He will relinquish command of the R.N.Z.A.F. station at Mechanic’s Bay, Auckland, to-day. Wing Commander J. M. Checketts, who has been commanding officer at Wigram since Group Captain C. E. Kay left to attend the Imperial Defence College in London, will return to his former post as administration officer. Mr D. W. Lake, clerk at the New Zealand Legation in Moscow, has been granted the degree of Bachelor of Arts by the University of New Zealand. A former Christchurch journalist, Mr Lake went directly to Moscow from the 2nd N.Z.E.F., with which he had been serving in Italy. Before the war he had been a student at Canterbury University College. Mr W. H.. Hindle, of Wellington, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, is visiting Christchurch. Last evening he addressed the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce on recent work of the organisation.-
