REQUEST FROM MacARTHUR
Women And Children To Disembark
BLAME DENIED BY HEADQUARTERS
(Rec. 1.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 8. General MacArthur’s Headquarters in. Tokyo has denied responsibility for the overcrowding Of the Japanese destroyer Yoizuki. A statement received by the American authorities in Sydney said: “Nothing is known in Japan of any intent to load women and children passengers. The responsibilities of General Headquarters are limited solely to supplying for the local authorities ships of rated capacity. Loading facilities and authorities rest entirely in the hands of local commanders.” Headquarters said that General MacArthur, on learning of the situation, requested the Australian military and naval authorities to disembark all women and children with the males of their families at Rabaul or some other port nearer Sydney selected by Australian officials, and arranged for the Japanese hospital ship Hikawa Maru to carry them for the rest of their journey. Other passengers on the “hell ship,” principally Formosan prisoners of War, will continue the voyage to Formosa as originally scheduled.
