MAGISTRATE’S COURT
(Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.)_ REMANDED Alexander Kyle,, alias McKay, aged 39, a baker (Mr C. V. Lester), was remanded to appear on March 11 on a charge that on February 23, not "being a person holding a licence under the Distillation Act, 19U8, he had in his possession a still suitable for the process of distillation. Bail was renewed. drunkenness John Arthur Crawford, aged 55, a coak, was fined £l, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, having been previously convicted in the last months. BOOKMAKER FINED A fine of £l5 was imposed on Daniel Bainbridge Robb, aged 32, a labourer, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying on business as a bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant A. A. Herron said that two detectives had visited a city hotel on Saturday and found the accused taking bets. Up to noon he had taken £3 in bets, mostly in half-crowns. He was in business on his own account, but was in a very small way.
LICENSING CHARGES Alfred Baptist Wallace (Mr K. J. MeMenamin) was fined £lO when he pleaded guilty to selling liquor after hours. Two barmen, William George Rapley and Henry Sydney Rowe, for whom .Mr McMenamin appeared, were each fined £3 for supplying liquor after hours. For being found on licensed premises after hours, the following persons were each fined £l:—Lily Marion Katherine Boka, James Thomas Christie, Campbell Thomas Climie, Lloyd Merivale George Giles, Walter Francis Harrison, Clifford Herron, Cecil Arthur Johnson, Eileen Isobel Hough, Joan Eleanor Hough, Arthur John Love, Claude John Mortimer, George Murray, Edgar Clarence Primmer, Cecil Gordon Smith, Harold Stemmer, Thomas Arnold Stevens, and Dorothy Sullivan. ADJOURNED Charges of being on licensed premises after hours against Harold Hooper, Archie McNeill, Dennis Michael O’Connor, Frank Paviell, and Roy Tully were adjourned until March 25. CHARGES DISMISSED David Toi Toi, aged 43, a labourer (Mr D. J. Hewitt), pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing three screwdrivers and a hammer, of a total value of 12s 6d, the property of Norman Winter Eggleston, and not guilty to stealing a saw valued at £1 ss, the property of John Wildermoth. Both charges were dismissed.
COMMITTED FOR TRIAL Christopher Noel Slade, aged 48, a truck-driver (Mr D. W. Russell), pleaded not guilty to a charge that on November 1 he made a false statement purporting to be signed by W. Faulkner, 124 Opawa road, with intent that it should be acted upon as genuine. He was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being allowed in self £lOO. Ayith one surety of £lOO or two sureties each of £5O.
Walter Tainui Faulkner said in evidence that he and his wife owned a house which had been rented by the accused for 15s a week. On November 17 he had received a cheque for £5 5s from the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council and a notice saying that the money was for seven weeks’ rent owing by the accused. As the rent was not in arrears to that extent, he had seen officials of the council and had been shown a paper which stated that the rent was in arrears for seven weeks, and a signature. “W. Faulkner.” which had not been made by Pauline Celesta Roach, formerly a stenographer, employed by the Canterbury Provincial Council, said the accused had seen her on November 1 and asked for assistance from the patriotic funds. She told him he would have to produce accounts for the consideration of the standing committee. Accounts, including the statement purporting to be signed by the previous witness, had been considered by the committee, and on November 15 a chenue had been sent to Mr Faulkner When the accused was interviewed by Detective Eric Gladstone Ward, he had made a statement in which he admitted writing the document and signing Faulkner’s name. Detective Ward said in evidence that up to November 10, £2 5s had been owing in rent.
