GRADE COMPETITIONS NEAR END
NORTH LINWOOD WOMEN SUCCESSFUL The senior women’s competition of the f Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association was ; won on Saturday by North Linwood. * which maintained an unbeaten record through the five rounds. Other competitions are also nearing the end, and on Saturday Shirley beat Avonside to draw level in the third mixed grade competition. A play-off between these teams wiU now be necessary. In the second mixed f;rade, Avonside has a one-point lead rom St. Paul’s, Edgeware, and Waimairi. but as an earlier match between Avonside and St. Paul’s ’has to be replayed it would appear |hat the competition lies between these teams. Final competition points in the senior women's grade are:—
Results of Saturday’s matches are as follows: SENIOR WOMEN’S GRADE North Linwood v. Woolston Singles.—Mrs D. Donnithorne beat Miss B. Parish. 6-1, 6-1; Mrs J. Corich beat Miss N. Davey, 6-0, 6-3: Miss S. Elsom beat Miss S. Weir. 7-9, 6-4, 6-1: Miss A. Hughes beat Mrs R. Caldwell, 6-3, 6-4. Doubles.—Mesdames Donnithorne and Corich beat Misses Parish and Davey, 8-6. 6-3. North Linwood won by 5 matches to 0. Elmwood v. University Singles.—Miss M. Whiteside lost to Miss J. M. Mac Gibbon. 6-4. 3-6, 6-8; Mrs S. Austin beat Miss I. Kitson. 6-2, 5-7, 6-2; Mrs G. Archer beat Miss M. Newell, 7-5, 2-6, 8-6; Miss M. Ekenstein lost to Miss A. Peppier, 5-7, 6-1, 3-6. Doubles.—Mrs Austin and Miss Whiteside beat Misses Mac Gibbon and Kitson, 8-6, 5-7, 6-3; Mrs Archer and Miss Ekenstein lost to Misses Newell and Peppier, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6. Elmwood won by 97 games to 90. SENIOR 'MEN’S GRADE University v. Elmwood II Singles.—J. B. Bushell lost to H. A. Barnett, 4-6, 4-6; E. D. White beat F. J. Bennett, 7-5, 6-3; B. R. Penfold beat W. PryceJones. 6-4, 3-6, 6-4; G. J. Naim beat W. Hooper. 6-4, 6-0 Doubles.—Bushell and Nairn lost to Barnett and Bennett, 4-6, 6-1, 4-6; White and Penfold beat Pryce-Jones and Hooper, 8-6, 6-2. Canterbury College won by 4 matches to 2. SECOND MIXED GRADE Avonside beat Edgeware, 9-7. Spreydon beat Barrington, 14-2. Shirley beat Opawa, 10-6. St. Paul’s beat Woolston, 10-6. Waimairi beat North Linwood, 14-2. THIRD MIXED GRADE Shirley beat Avonside, 9-7. Woolston beat Windermere I, 9-7. Addington beat Edgeware, 13-3.
