EZRA POUND NOT TO BE TRIED
DECLARED MENTALLY UNFIT (Rec. 9 pari.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 13. A United States District Court jury, found Ezra Pound, the poet, mentally unsound. Therefore Pound will not be tried on the treason charges arising from his war-time broadcasts from Italy. Two psychiatrists gave evidence that Pound was a sensitive, eccentric, cynical person in a paranoic state of psychotic proportions, rendering him unfit for trial. The Associated Press says that Pound will be detained at the St. Elizabeth Mental Hospital in Washington, and could be brought to trial later if his mental condition improves. Ambassador to Greece.—The diplomatic correspondent of the “Daily Herald’’ says Mr Clifford Norton, British Minister at Berne, will be appointed British Ambassador to Greece in succession to Mr Richard Leeper, who is being transferred to Argentina. —London, February 14.
