DRIVER KILLED WHEN CAR CRASHES INTO DITCH

(P.A.) PALMERSTON N., Feb. 13. When a motor-car left the main highway and crashed into a ditch north of Woodville this morning, the driver, who is believed to be Paul Lethbridge Mason, an. agricultural contractor, of Foxton line, Palmerston North, suffered fatal injuries. Mason was thrown from the car. He was found by a farmer, who was attracted by the screech of brakes and the glare of stationary lights. CHILD’S DEATH FROM BURNS Severe burns on the body and face were received by Pauline O’Regan, aged 14 months, only child of Mr and Mrs P. O’Regan (Cronadun), when the child pulled a lighted candle int'o a cot on Tuesday evening. She was admitted to the Reef ton Hospital in a serious condition, and died yesterday from burns and shock. FATAL BURNS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 13 Seriously burned in an apartmenthouse fire in Hobson street this morning, Hugh Close, single, eged 71, has died m hospital. The fire damaged a passageway and room in the house. MOTOR TRUCK AND TRAIN IN COLLISION When a motor-truck, owned by Transport (North Csnterbury), Ltd was involved in an accident with a north-bound goods train at the Alliance street level crossing at Addington about 3.45 o’clock yesterday afternoon, the driver, Mr Leslie Hyde, of Cust, had a fortunate escape from serious injury. The motor-truck was extensively damaged in the crash, but Mr Hyde suffered only minor bruises and shock.

The motor-truck was about half loaded, principally with sheep, although in one compartment were several drums of power kerosene. Four of the sheep were killed. Others were shaken, but riot injured. Mr Hyde had been loading sheep from a pen near the crossing, and was driving to the pig-pens on the other side of the saleyards when the accident occurred. After the impact, the motor-truck was thrown head-on into a deep ditch beside the line, about 15 yards north of the crossing. The rear of the cab was forced against the dashboard. The train involved in the accident was on its way from Christchurch to Belfast.
