IMPERIAL TRADE PREFERENCE

AUSTRALIAN ATTITUDE (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Feb. 12. In spite of a statement by the United States Secretary of State (Mr J. F. Byrnes) the abandonment of Empire preference will not follow automatically on the granting of the United States’ loan to Britain. The aim of the Imperial Conference in London in May will be to present a united Empire front at the world trade conference in the United States. Australia’s economy depends on Empire preference and any sudden, uncompensated abandonment of it would present Australia with grave economic problems. Therefore Australia is prepared to t«ck Britain to the limit in resisting any attempt co destroy Empire preference.
