FIRE MENACE
Sir, —Much has been said. about picnickers being the cause of fires in the country. While they may carelessly start some fires, the fault is not always theirs. Only last Saturday I witnessed a farmer ans his son Start to bum off a paddock of wheat stubble in a howling gale. They had been round the paddock with the plough but never realised how fires can fly overland, and in a matter of seconds the flames were over the paddock and caught the gorse fence. Fortunately the road was wide at this comer; for miles of country including a State forest were in direct line with the fire and gale. So much for careless people. Will they never realise the danger to others —and at the same time the value of wheat stubble if ploughed in?—Yours, etc., HUMUS. February 12, 1946.
