NEW GAS TURBINE UNIT
POWER PLANT FOfc AIR TRANSPORT The harnessing of the power of a gas turbine engine for other than the usual jet propulsion duties (in the oftorbo-jet) has been announced by the Bristol Aeroplane Company in England. Their engine, the Bristol Theseus I, consists of a gas turbine combined as an integral unit with a conventional airscrew, the main motive force being from the airscrew. This step in gas turbine development, although widely acknowledged as inevitable, represents a revolutionary method in the use of jet propulsion and Jays open a new source of power to designers of air and water craft. The advantages of the turbine/aitscrew are: a fuel consumption lower than a turbo-jet and comparable with a piston engine, long periods between overhaul, efficiency of propulsion over a wide range, low overall diameter, and almost vibrationless running. The Theseus was designed for economic use in air transport, and will be used mainly as a power plant in long-range aircraft
