TURF GOSSIP

Answer to Correspondent “R.A.C.,” Weedons: £2 17s, £2 14s 6d. New Arrival The five-year-old gelding Salary is now being trained at Riccarton by T. H. Gillett for his South Canterbury owner, Mr S. G. Mackenzie. Trained at Levin Piccolo, which was left in the North Island after racing at Trentham last month, had his first race since in the sprint event at the Otaki meeting, last Saturday. He failed to get away as well as usual, and was soon in a hopeless position, finishing a long way in the rear. Ficcolo is still owned by Mr F. W. Stevens,. of Christchurch, and is now trained at Levin by the former Wingatui trainer, J. A. Wilson. Made Good Racket never carries much condition, but is very solid, as she has shown by her game efforts in the high-weight events she has contested in recent months. On Monday at Blenheim she was kept up to her work from the start, and did not allow Roto Parera to streak to the front with an unassailable break, as in the Marlborough Cup, in which she also ran very wide entering the straight. Roto Parera again led her into the straight on Monday, but she easily outstayed him in yie run home. Racket was very disappointing in her early races for Mr J. H. Parsons, of Christchurch, who purchased her from Mr H. D. Greenwood for 200 guineas, but is now well on the credit side, and will carry on as a winner in middle class company. Her next race will be in the Nelson Cup next month, and A. C. Messervy will be on hand to ride her again. First Win

Fire Chase, a winner at Blenheim on Monday, is a four-year-old filly by Wild Chase from Blaze, by Campfire, and was bred by Mr A. F. Loe, who raced a halfsister. Miss Blaze, on the first day. Fire Chase is now own?d by Mr J. W. Gosling, of Blenheim, and is trained by R. Drinkwater.

Promising Form Master Baron, a double winner at Blenheim, is a four-year-old gelding by Croupier from Lady Baron, an Australianbred mare by Baralong from Torquay, by Martian from imported Torquato, and was bred by T. R. George, who sold him to his present owner-trainer, E. J. Adams, of Trentham. Master Baron was not tested In his two races, but he promises to develop into a useful stake-earner. Resuming Training W. D Moroney, who has been In business for some years, may return to training at Awapuni shortly. Moroney prepared Vertigern for his Wellington Cup triumph in 1929, and he also had a good deal of success with other horses carrying Mr C. Elgar’s colours. Impressive Win Barrage was responsible for a good performance when he opened his account among the handicappers at Otaki on Saturday. He was always in a handy position, and was taken to the outside at the home turn to commence a run which took him to the lead a few yards short of the post. A solid stayer. Barrage is a four-year-old gelding by the Dominion-bred sire, Spiral, from Curtain, and, judging by his latest performance, it would not be surprising if he developed into a really good handicapper. For Amateur Riders The New Zealand Racing Conference has advised the Dunedin Jockey Club that the club has been granted the right to hold the race for the Duke of Gloucester Cup during the current season. At a recent meeting of the club it was decided to make inquiries regarding the number of gentlemen riders who would be available in the event of the race being included in the programme for the winter meeting.
