GOOD WISHES EXPRESSED
RETIREMENT OF CHIEF TRAFFIC INSPECTOR
Tributes to. the fairness and efficiency of Mr J. Bruorton, Chief Traffic Inspector to the Christchurch City Council, were paid in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when Mr Bruorton made his last appearance as prosecutor before his retirement.
The Assistant-Chief Inspector (Mr J. James) said that Mr ’’ Bruorton had joined the department in 1922, and had been appointed assistant-chief inspector in 1926. Ten years later he had been appointed chief inspector, a position he had held ever since. He had completed 23 years’ service with the department, which congratulated him on his fine service and wished him a happy period of retirement. Sergeant J. M. Bourke, for the police, expressed the good wishes of his department. Mr Bruorton had always cooperated to the full with the police, and his association with the department had been the very best. Mr Bruorton had always been a competent, fair, and impartial prosecutor, said Mr R. A. Young. He felt he was expressing the sentiments of all members of the legal profession in paying tribute to Mr Bruorton’s service.
Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., who had associated with him on the Bench Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., also paid tribute to Mr Bruorton’s work and wished him a pleasant retirement. In a brief reply, Mr Bruorton thanked Mr Lawry and other magistrates for the advice they had given willingly at all times. He expressed his appreciation of the co-operation extended him by the police and the solicitors. Without it he would not have been able to do the job.
